In light of living in a messed up time, within a messed up world, with messed up tragedies numbing us to our core, in light of all that has happened, all that is happening and all that will come, we must remember to be thankful for the little things. Not just once a year, but notice them in our everyday lives. By doing that, it creates a sense of positivity, and helps you find joys in the little moments that will help you to live more fully.
When I first had the idea to write about finding the little things in life, I wanted to also remind myself what I’m thankful for on a day to day basis.
I decided to narrow it down to my top five:
- Hot white chocolate mocha
- Laughing uncontrollably with people you love
- Building human connection and relationship through in depth conversation
- Memorizing quotes & statistics
- Completing a “To-Do List”
I never realized how thankful I was for those little things. What I, and I’m sure many don’t realize is those little things don’t ‘belong’ in everyday life and they don’t belong to me. You must remember that the list above is just extras. Little blessings that stumble upon my day and make it so much better. By enlightening yourself and being thankful for those things, I guarantee you will feel much more full.
However, sometimes it can be hard to notice the little things. Certain things become so normal in your life that people forget to notice even the simplest things that are truly blessings. When I sat down with myself to think about what types of things I take for granted each day, I made a list that may or may not resonate with you.
- Simple food and water supply
- Coming home to a warm bed & blankets
- Having people to talk to
- Living in a place with four seasons
- Rights to education
- Ability to hold down a job
- Listening to an amazing song on repeat
These are just little reminders that even though sometimes we lose sight of where we are at with life, that you’re actually doing just fine. We forget how much we have, and we are so lucky to be able to forget sometimes because usually when you remember it’s because you lose what you forgot to be thankful for in the first place.
So right now, reflect on what you have. Anything from a good meal, a good relationship, to a job promotion, or a new song that was just released. Be thankful for that, thank someone, and spread that gratitude throughout your circle, so they can spread it through theirs and you can help shine light in a place that sometimes can seem so dark.
As I was scrolling through pinterest this afternoon, I saw a quote without an author that resonated with myself and with this post. It read: “The more you thank life, the more life gives you to be thankful for.” When it comes down to it, the more thankful you are, the more you can add to your list of what you’re thankful for.
Rarely (& thankfully) yours,
